Comparison
yapjar vs rosebud: an honest comparison.
We make YapJar, so read this knowing that. Everything said about Rosebud below was read off its App Store listing and its help center on October 10, 2026, and is quoted or linked so you can check it. Prices are US App Store prices and can change.
the short version.
Rosebud is an AI companion you journal with. Its listing calls it "your personal AI-powered self care companion" and "a therapist-recommended journaling and self-reflection tool", and its entry reflection is "summarized and reflected back to you with key insights". It is the better-known app, with a 4.9 rating from about 3.3K ratings, a large feature set, and no free plan since September 30, 2026.
YapJar is a voice journal you talk to. It asks three questions in the evening and four in the morning, keeps what you said in your own words, and puts an analysis on a separate tab. It is newer, smaller, cheaper, and free for one entry a day.
If you want an AI that talks back and guides you, Rosebud is built for that. If you want the lightest possible daily habit and a journal that stays yours, YapJar is built for that.

| free plan | yes. one entry a day in your own words, for as long as you like. your first two entries come with their analysis. the whole archive, search and export are free. | none. Rosebud's help center says "Effective September 30, 2026, the Rosebud free plan will be retired", because it is "unable to sustainably offer a free tier moving forward". |
| how you write | talk or type. the app asks three questions in the evening, four in the morning, one at a time, and you answer. a keyboard switch is everywhere you can talk. | "write or speak your thoughts". morning intention, evening reflection, guided journals, blank entries, photos, and scanning a handwritten journal. |
| what the AI does with an entry | a spoken entry has mishears and filler repaired; a typed one is kept as typed. a separate analysis tab adds topics, people and mood in your words, and a short titled read with one insight and one question. | "each journal entry is summarized and reflected back to you with key insights." a "dig deeper" conversation, auto-tagging, long-term memory, and a weekly report. |
| usage limits | members: a morning and an evening entry every day, thoughts all day, a weekly look back, and asking your journal a question. free: one entry a day. | a weekly AI usage meter with warnings at 50%, 70% and 90%; at 100%, dig deeper is blocked until the limit resets. pick rosebud if.
- You want a conversation. Rosebud is built to respond, ask you to go deeper, and remember across entries. That is the product.
- You want guided journals and a large library of structured exercises.
- You journal on an iPad, add photos, or want to scan a paper journal.
- You would rather have a mature app with thousands of ratings than a new one.
pick yapjar if.
- You have tried journaling and not kept it up, and you want the version that takes a minute and no typing.
- You want the entry to be what you actually said. The AI's read lives on its own tab and quotes you when it refers to what you said.
- You want a free tier that stays free, or you do not want to spend $12.99 a month on a journal.
- You want a quiet app. Reminders are optional and never mention a missed day. Nothing in it praises or scolds you.
what we did not compare.
How good each AI's writing is, because that is a matter of taste and we are not a neutral judge of it. And anything from reviews or forums, which are easy to quote selectively. One trap if you research this yourself: Rosebud AI, the game-making tool at rosebud.ai, is a different company from the Rosebud journal, and several "Rosebud review" articles mix up the two. If something here is out of date, email support@yapjar.com and it will be fixed.
